This is a triptych created by manipulating colors and pixels from a video of a candle flickering, exploring the mechanical tendencies of the moving image from the process to the resulting outcome.

A candle flickered. The flicker was recorded. Edited in DaVinci Resolve, the candle-flicker video sequence was layered into 8 video channels, with each channel containing a modified version of the sequence. The first video layer remains at a Normal blending mode with 100% opacity. The opacity was decreased for each layer, with the odd-numbered layers blended in Difference mode and the even-numbered layers blended in Screen mode. As each layer was added, the video was rotated 90 degrees and then flipped horizontally or vertically to produce the kaleidoscopic effect. The kaleidoscopic effect was then replicated three more times with slightly different blending modes such as Overlay, Screen, and Lighten.
